the brief

The brief was to design a simple lighting solution to suit the home. I saw opportunities to design a fixture that would mainly be used in a bedroom context as a bedside light, but saw opportunity to expand that into an office or living area setting. This meant the design had to be adjustable, flexible and be easily modified to suit different aesthetics. The driving inspirations for this project would be the natural elements of the Australian bush.

ideation

The brief was driven by Australian Flora, and the initial direction focused mainly on my favourite elements of the bush, but ended up requiring a more homely vibe. The idea to use Australian Indoor Plants as inspiration would help tie in more with home aesthetics as well as evoke a recognisable sense of nature within the bedroom/ living space setting.

Within this design there will be multiple sources of light. The back plate will be include a sensor, which will be movement triggered to turn on, and with no sense of movement will turn off after a set time. Each of the Adjustable lamps can be individually controlled with the included remote. This includes brightness settings, timer settings and potentially colour changes.

minimal styling

The styling of Spath was designed to be customisable and accessible to a variety of contexts. The wooden plate can be interchanged and is the key element of the lighting fixture.

“Lighting design is key to the comfort of the bedroom. With this contemporary lighting solution, the user is able to tailor the light to their needs. Ensuring that the user has full control over the direction and intensity of the lighting, various moods can be set purely from the Spath design. Inspired by a Peace Lily, evoking senses of calm and beauty, “
