the brief
The brief was to design a piece of furniture that suited both an indoor and outdoor context. While initially it was believed that due to the client being based in China, this product needed to suit the Chinese market. It was later revealed that the company’s main distribution channels were China, America and Western Europe. This allowed more flexibility in terms of design, with size, price and ultimate functionality no longer a necessity. It was decided that a chair best suited the client’s needs and manufacturing facilities.

The brief was heavily driven by the research of my thesis. The thesis explored the relationship between outdoor lifestyles and the benefits both emotionally, physically and mentally. This drove the design towards seating and promoting a mobile lifestyle. A domestic application was decided on, which enabled me to design a lounge chair that would have both indoor and outdoor practicality.
After the initial presentations, the client required some design changes. In their opinion it was perfect for outside but didn’t suit for an indoor chair, needed to look more inviting. The design was refined to look more comfortable as well as provide better support optimised for conversation and comfort.
